TULSI LIMITED
With Indian food among New Zealand's most popular eating out and takeaway options, it's perhaps surprising that no reliable chain has been developed. But all that's about to change with the launch of Tulsi.
Tulsi is the creation of Indian restaurateur Monty Patel, who arrived in New Zealand 22 years ago. Having completed his degree, he learned the grocery business in his brother's superette before owning his own supermarket 'which teaches you pretty much everything about business,' he says.
Changing tacks, he then opened his first restaurant in Wellington's Cuba Mall back in 1999. Since then, he has added two more in Wellington (Petone and Miramar) and one in Christchurch, two food court operations and another restaurant at Wellington Airport.
Now he has geared up for further growth, creating a purpose-built factory to produce the special sauces that will be served in Tulsi restaurants and supermarkets nationwide.
Tulsi has been designed to stand out from the rather old-fashioned Indian restaurants that dot the landscape.
'Every Tulsi restaurant is designed to combine beautiful décor and friendly staff with the best in contemporary Indian cuisine,' says Monty. 'Dining - even a quick business lunch - should be an experience, not just a fuel stop. We take our cooking very seriously to ensure that we offer truly authentic Indian flavours.'
'Now my greatest ambition is to expand throughout the country and share the Tulsi experience with New Zealanders in cities and towns across the country.'
CDA originally worked with Monty to franchise the business, and has since been involved in developing new products and get his range of fresh and frozen packaged meals and pies into supermarkets nationwide. We have now taken on what may be viewed as a unique role by our team acting as contracted general management support for the overall business.
Monty is incredible enthusiastic about his business but cautions that the hospitality industry only suits those who are prepared to put heart and soul into it.
'The hours are long at first and, as with any new business, you've got to work hard. On the other hand, there are many compensations. You will meet new people and old friends every day and give them a great experience. You'll have the support of proven systems and hugely experienced people. Above all, you'll reap the benefits of owning a successful business. '
Tulsi is certain to have a lot of people who think the return on investment is worth the effort.
